These blocks are often the last Merlot blocks to ripen on the estate. At 340 meters (1115 feet) above sea level and the lowest point of the estate, where the Ombrone river is just a sparkling brook, lies the vineyard Valadorna with the uninhabited Valadorna farmhouse protecting it. The soil is loamy limestone and has deep reaching sources of iron and other minerals. Merlot thrives here spectacularly well. The grapes are hand-picked and cold soaked for 3-5 days and fermented on skins in stainless steel for 18-25 days. They are then drained and pressed directly into barrels and racked every four months.
