Description
This Merlot-led red wine blend is sourced primarily from the Valadorna and Capraia vineyard blocks located within the cooler part of the estate, which produce our Tuscan estate’s most complex and mineral-led expressions of this variety.
The Valadorna and Capraia vineyard blocks from which Valadorna is primarily sourced, produce lower yields than typical with very concentrated and high quality fruit. These blocks are often the last Merlot blocks to ripen on the estate. At 340 meters (1115 feet) above sea level and the lowest point of the estate, where the Ombrone river is just a sparkling brook, lies the vineyard Valadorna with the uninhabited Valadorna farmhouse protecting it. The soil is loamy limestone and has deep reaching sources of iron and other minerals. Merlot thrives here spectacularly well. The grapes are hand-picked and cold soaked for 3-5 days and fermented on skins in stainless steel for 18-25 days. They are then drained and pressed directly into barrels and racked every four months. The wine is bottled 22 months after vintage and aged a minimum of two years in bottle before release.
